City shinny
The cheapest way to get a game with no commitment. Most sessions are weekday mornings or midday, with a 55+ game on Sunday morning and women’s shinny on Saturday. Times and booking steps are on shinny sessions.
University of Guelph drop-in
Rec Hockey at the Gryphon Centre Arena (149 Reynolds Walk) is self-organized shinny for ages 18 and up, with no referees or clock. Community members need a day pass or a recreation membership; enrolled on-campus students get in with their student access.
The university requires a CSA-approved helmet with a full face mask and full hockey equipment. Body checking and slap shots are not allowed. See the university skating and hockey page for session times and passes.
Gryphon Old Timer Hockey League
A community league that plays at the Gryphon Centre in the fall and winter semesters. Teams register and pay through the university’s recreation portal, then build a roster online. The league page does not list fees, game nights or a minimum age, so ask the organizer named on the GOHL page.
Game On Guelph
Game On runs a co-ed recreational ice hockey league. Its most recent listing we found was an eight-game season on Wednesday evenings from January to February 2026 at Puslinch Optimist Arena, south of the city, at $175 per player or $2,000 per team. Check Game On’s ice hockey page for the next season’s dates and price.
Students
University of Guelph students can play intramural hockey.
Bring your own group
If you have enough players, renting an hour of ice can work out simpler than finding a league. See ice rentals for how city bookings work.
