Times copied from the city’s fall/winter 2026 schedule (PDF) on October 3, 2026. The city says the schedule is subject to change, so check the live city listing before you go.

Nearly every session is on a weekday morning or midday. If you work days, look at Sunday morning (55+), Saturday (women’s) or the options under adult hockey.

What to bring

Skates, stick and full hockey equipment, including a helmet. The city requires full equipment and helmets for shinny.
One light jersey and one dark jersey so teams can sort themselves out.
Your booking confirmation and enough time to dress before the session begins.

The city does not rent skates.

How booking works

Open the city skating and shinny schedule and select a session that matches your age.
Confirm the date, arena and available space. The city caps shinny at 22 skaters and two goalies.
Pre-register online, in person at a city recreation centre or by phone at 519-837-5699. The city takes registrations up to 23 hours before the session starts.
Check for a cancellation before you leave.

The city’s pages do not list the drop-in price. You will see it when you book, or you can ask at 519-837-5699.

Playing with a child?

The city has offered Adult/Child Shinny, a self-led game where both the adult and the child register and wear full equipment. It was not on the fall/winter schedule we checked, so confirm with the city that it is running. If the child is still learning to balance, try a public or family skate first.

Want a regular team or your own slot?

See adult hockey for leagues and university drop-in. University of Guelph students can check university intramural hockey. To organize your own group, start with ice rentals. For a younger player who wants a season, see minor hockey options.
