Your child’s first hockey season

Reviewed October 3, 2026 · Guelph Hockey

Before your child’s first hockey season, sort out four things: skating, the right age division, registration and gear.

Start with skating

If your child still needs help staying upright, ask about skating school before hockey. A child who can move, turn and get up after a fall may be ready to try a beginner hockey program. Check minor hockey options for the current Guelph options.

The parent checklist

  1. Confirm the division. Use GMHA’s birth-year chart, not your child’s school grade.
  2. Check the season calendar. Put evaluation, practice and game commitments beside the rest of your family’s schedule.
  3. Register through GMHA. The 2026–27 house league deadline has passed; check 2026–27 registration details and ask the association whether a late place is possible.
  4. Fit the gear. Take the GMHA equipment list when shopping. Have your child try skates and protective gear on before the first ice time.
  5. Read the money details. Confirm the current registration fee, refund rules and any further team costs.

The first trip to the rink

Pack the bag the night before. Put the helmet, skates, gloves, stick and water bottle where you can find them quickly. Arrive early enough to dress without a rush, ask where the team meets, and tell the coach if your child is brand new or anxious.

If the first skate feels hard

Ask the coach what to practise next: getting up, stopping or turning. Keep the next skate short and low pressure.

Do you have to buy all-new equipment?

Used gear can reduce the cost, but fit and condition matter. Check the association’s list and have a knowledgeable person inspect anything protective, especially the helmet. Do not guess that an older sibling’s gear fits.

If your child wants extra ice time, read the city’s shinny sessions rules first: shinny requires full hockey gear and helmets, and sessions have age limits. For a gentler start, try public skating.
